Phenylketonuria phenylketonuria is a rare inherited condition. It impacts the individual's ability to metabolize an essential nutrient called phenylalanine. Normally, the body creates an enzyme called phenylalanine hydroxylase, which transforms phenylalanine into tyrosine. In people who have PKU, this enzyme lacks function properly. As a result, ph
